School Ball, High School Formal, Year 12 Formal, Debutante Ball, Prom. What is the difference?

The answer is nothing. Different states and countries all over the world refer to the this same event of students celebrating leaving high school and moving on to the next phase of their adult lives, whether it be university, college, employment or technical and further education.

Regardless of what it is called the school ball, high school formal, year 12 formal, school formal, prom, leavers ball, leavers dinner or the debutante ball – it is the biggest social event and celebration on the school calendar and is a very special event in a teenager’s life.

School Balls

A school ball is a formal ball held for students during their final year of high school. In Perth, Western Australia in most government schools your final year ball is called the School Ball. A few private schools in Perth WA refer to this event as the School Formal or Year 12 Formal. In Perth, WA we refer to dresses and suits worn to these events as ball dresses, ball gowns and suits, or ball suits.

School Formals

A School Formal, Formal or Year 12 Formal, is an event held during the school year for students in Brisbane QLD, Sydney NSW, Melbourne VIC, Adelaide SA, Tasmania HOBART, Darwin NT and New Zealand high schools. Dresses and suits worn to a school formal are referred to as Formal dresses, Formal Gowns and Formal Suits.

Prom

The word Prom is short for promenade. The Prom is a formal black tie dance, or gathering of high school students. It held at the end of junior and/or senior year. It is a major event among high school students. Proms are held in USA, Canada and some parts of the UK. Dresses and Suits worn to Prom are referred to Prom Dresses, Prom Gowns and Prom Suits.

Debutane Ball or Deb Ball

USA, England, Ireland and some parts of Australia hold Debutane Balls or Deb Balls. In tradition A debutante ball / deb ball is to formally introduce you into society and symbolises your debut into adult hood. It is tradition that girls asks the guys to a debutante ball and Debutante dresses are white.

Leavers Ball

In some parts of the UK the event is called the Leavers Ball or Leavers Dinner. Dresses are called Leavers Dresses and Leavers Gowns.

Most women have a little black dress that can be pulled out and wear at a moments notice to a special event. Black is a color that goes with any occasion and can be worn just about anywhere. A black prom dress is a great choice because it is elegant and exudes formality. It makes you feel dressed up and ready for anything.

The color black has a slimming effect and hides a multitude of sins. It makes the hips look narrower and hides any unwanted bumps. In some styles a black prom dress might even make you look taller if you are very short. You can put color in accessories and shoes and look very sophisticated and tasteful.

Both short and long prom dresses are made in black. Many times they are combined with another color and the most popular is white. Black dresses also can be accented with red. You won’t find many ball gowns made in black but you can find so many other styles in the color that it might make your head spin. Many times black prom dresses are accented with sequins, pearls, rhinestones, sparkles and sometimes fur and feathers.

A pearl necklace looks great with a black dress. If you want to wear a chain with a pendant gold will look fine but silver really stands out with black clothing. Wear a crystal pendant or you can wear onyx, a black stone. If you want to wear a bright color in your jewelry go with purple or something red.

Your date should also wear black. If you are wearing red to accent your dress he can wear a white shirt with a red tie. Wearing a black tux with a white shirt will make you look great together. You will both look sophisticated and elegant. Going to a prom is a time honored tradition that you will always remember so be safe and have the time of your life.

O, one more thing don’t forget to smile in all the pictures your gonna have to take. Nothing is worse than to be all dresses up for the prom and look bad in a picture because you forgot to smile.

You have to be a bit daring to wear a white prom dress mainly because you have to work really hard at making it not look like a wedding dress. White dresses for prom need to be simple without a great deal of embellishment. Some beading or clear crystals and sequins look nice on a white dress and it does not come off as being too much.

Girls that are very fair should probably stay away from white dresses because it will wash out their features and make them look dull. If you are fair and still want to wear white it is suggested that you go get a tan. Girls with a tan look fantastic with white dresses.

You can add a little color to the dress by taking some material and making a sash that will tie around the waste or just above if there is an empire waist. Use silver or gold to stay in the neutral range but give yourself a little glitter.

Black is a great color to add along with some black shoes. Red is another color that is bold and you can also wear red shoes. You can actually make your sash any color you wish. Pastels work very well as do the bolder and darker colors.

Picking out shoes for a white dress is easy. If you are not going to add any color to the dress itself you should pick white shoes. Wear satiny pumps, white sandals, patent leather heals or ballet slippers, just make sure they are white. They can have gold or silver accents. If you want to be a little more daring you can wear either gold or silver shoes.

Wearing a white prom dress is in itself a statement that most people associate with bridal gowns so when you decide to go with white, remember you’ve already got people’s attention and heads will turn admiring how great you look.
