The senior prom is one of the few opportunities for young women to dress up and enjoy themselves, as well as show off prom dresses ranging from elegant and demure to flirty and outrageous. This year, as you shop for a perfectly cute prom dress, you may ask yourself if you should wear a short, cocktail style dress instead of the traditional floor length gown. While a short-hemmed dress is fashionable and looks great in many colors, not every body style is suited for this type.

Which girls are best suited to wear a short dress for the prom? Take a look in the mirror and study how you look. Are you petite and short? If so, a short, strapless prom dress may work, especially if you have a slim frame and small bust. With the right pair or high heeled shoes, such an outfit can give you the impression of greater height.

For plus-sized young women, some designers do make short dresses that work to emphasize features of your body that give you a nice shape. If you prefer not to wear a long dress, choose one that comes to just below the knee. You can show a bit of leg and complement your look with some flirty heels.

Some shorter prom dresses are design with a full skirt that offers shape to young women who are essentially slim. This design gives the illusion of a fuller backside and can also emphasize the waistline.

Certain colors are more suitable with the short prom dress model. Choose bright, light colors or a dramatic sapphire or emerald green – a color that complements your eyes and hair.

A knee-length prom outfit is good to wear in warmer months, if you know you plan to spend the evening dancing and enjoying yourself. When you shop online for your perfect dress, you are sure to find a short cut that’s right for you.

It is prom season – and you need to find a dress as soon as possible. Unfortunately, due to the economy – your parents have given you a budget that is less than what you initially hoped and planned for. Now you face a dilemma similar to thousands of other teens across the country, how can you find the most affordable prom gown – without looking cheap and tacky?

For starters, it is important for you to know that you are not alone in this particular situation. As I said, thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of parents are facing economic troubles. So do not be ashamed, and remember that the most important part of the event is for you to have fun! Now that we have gotten that pep talk out of the way – let me give you a few tips on finding affordable gowns for your junior or senior prom!

1. Think outside the box: Creativity and a little ingenuity can go a long way when you are under financial restrictions. Ask your older sister, cousin, or even neighbor if they have any formal gowns sitting around that they can give to you. If you do not feel comfortable with just taking something for nothing in exchange – work out a bartering deal. Perhaps you will babysit for a month as repayment, or clean out their basement or garage. Once you have the gown, be innovative with it – you can shorten in or add embellishments. If it has sleeves or straps, take it to a seamstress and have them turn it into a sleeveless or strapless gown! With the right dress, the possibilities are endless and by putting a little bit of work into it – you’ll definitely have the most unique dress at the dance!

2. Try vintage stores: Vintage and retro looks are always popular options for proms and formal events. Visit your area vintage stores and consignment shops in search of your perfect formal gown. These stores are known for having hot designer dresses for super cheap. If you find a dress that you love that turns out to be a size two big, or slightly damaged – negotiate an even larger discount and take it to the seamstress for alterations and repairs. Play up the old Hollywood glam theme with perfectly coiffed curls, dramatic make-up and rhinestone accessories.

3. Shop Online: The Internet is one of the best sources to turn to when you need to find a cheap prom dress. Virtually every online merchant selling formal gowns has a section for “affordable” or “cheap” options. You can save yourself some time by narrowing your search terms with certain keywords. For example, if your budget is two hundred dollars, do a search for “prom dresses under $200″. Doing this will show you all the results for websites that have dresses within your budget. Remember this – when buying discounted clothing online, they usually come with a no return and no exchange policy. This means that all sales are final. If the dress is ill-fitting, or the wrong color – you’ll just be out of luck.

Going to their high school special day may be the most important event for teenagers, as they describe it as being similar to being on the red carpet or walking down a fashion runway. So naturally, the girls want to look like starlets, which will usually drive them to search high and low for the best prom dress their budget will allow. They will drag their friends and hit every store in the mall, search every store in town, search the internet for information and try on an endless number of prom gowns to find the most unique and flattering.

When selecting your prom dress, make sure it fits properly, is comfortable and reflects your personal fashion style. There are enough different styles that you will have no problem finding a two piece ensemble, as well as short prom dresses and the longer more formal prom gowns. Often times girls will select the color black for their dress but that does not mean you can’t choose a different color and it will set you apart from many girls at the event.

There are other ways that you can take a basic prom gown and turn it into something that is truly you. You can add stunning details that will make your dress stand out, such as adding a sash with a splash of print or an extra long scarf in a contrasting color that you can toss over both shoulders in a mock train style. As well, don’t forget to consider your prom shoes, makeup, hairdo and jewelry.

Of course, the right accessories can turn your prom dress into something even more stunning. For instance, if you have chosen a long formal gown, then why not add an elegant pair of long gloves that match your dress. Or, if you have opted for a shorter dress in a bright color, such as apple red, then consider slipping on a pair of banana yellow gloves for a great fun and youthful effect. Other bright colors that work well together are yellow and watermelon, lime green with tangerine and raspberry with lemon yellow. The great thing about being a trend setter is watching everyone else copy your ideas!
